"Drama of the Soul": The Romantic Plays of Terence Rattigan
McConnell, Scott
English in Australia, v42 n1 p57-66 2007
Terence Rattigan is writer of psychological dramas whose unique works focus on the psychological issues and emotional conflicts of his characters. An analysis of three of Rattigan's most popular and influential works--"The Winslow Boy, Separate Tables, Ross"--highlights Rattigan's Romantic Realist focus on universal personal issues and values, the attitudes and choices of his characters, their psychological problems and conflicts, and his use of economical, essentialised dialogue. A section on teaching Rattigan to senior students, which includes questions and activities, focuses on his play "The Browning Version" and its values, attitudes and significance. (Contains 2 notes.)
