The Bologna Process and the New Reforms of Russian Education

This article presents the different opinions of specialists on The Bologna Process. The Bologna Process was brought into being by society's transition to a new stage of development, in which education and knowledge are becoming the decisive engines of progress. With the aim of creating a unified educational space, the Bologna Process was begun in the second half of the 1950s, the time of the signing of the Treaty of Rome that created the Common Market and laid the foundations for integrated transformations in Europe. The system of measures that comprise the Bologna Process is generally considered to include: three or four years for a bachelor's degree; one to two years for the master's degree; a system of credit units; and a universally recognized system of quality. The author stresses that the Bologna Declaration is not a reform imposed on government or on institutions of higher learning, instead the Bologna Process is designed to foster a closer association rather than a "standardization" or "uniformization" of higher education in Europe.
