It has been proposed that early language is acquired in the context of interpersonal interactions, with parent-child interactions serving as an important foundation (Nicely, Tamis-LeMonda, & Bornstein, 1999; Sachs, 2005; Tamis-LeMonda, Cristofaro, Rodriguez, & Bornstein, 2006). The purpose of this article is to review the literature on maternal sensitivity and attachment and examine how these constructs relate to the early development of language. In addition, intervention programs that enhance attachment security and parent-child interactions via changes in sensitivity and responsiveness, and thus the development of language, are also reviewed. Finally, a new model is presented to guide the development and evaluation of new early intervention programs that promote the development of early language skills by supporting mothers' development of sensitive interactions with children who are at risk for poor developmental outcomes.
