Competitive Robotics Brings out the Best in Students

This article features Advanced Competitive Science (ACS), a two-year course introduced by a science teacher, Joe Pouliot, in 2004 at Trinity High School in Manchester, New Hampshire. More than a traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) course, ACS harnesses the excitement of robotics competitions to promote student involvement. It teaches robotics engineering using project-based learning. The course can serve as an exploratory course in robotics or as a launching pad for engineering majors. Making use of the two-year Robotics Engineering Curriculum[TM] (REC) offered by intelitek, inc., ACS covers advanced physics, math, and engineering topics as it teaches robotics from the basics to advanced programming and design. According to Pouliot, "making robotics competitions a part of ACS has fueled the success of the program." While placing well at competitions and achieving awards are marks of a winning program, Pouliot believes real success is measured by something even more important--student success after graduation from the course.
