Bechtel, Pamela A.; Stevens, Lisa A.; Brett, Christine E. W.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v25 n4 p30-33 Mar-Apr 2012
The increased diversity of today's students included in P-12 physical education classes creates new challenges in behavior management for physical education teachers. Currently more students with identified at-risk behaviors, as well as more students with physical or mental disabilities, are placed in general physical education classes. This expanded population has created an additional need for physical education teachers to possess a variety of effective behavior management skills to deal with various situations they may encounter. This article presents information that will be useful for teachers across the spectrum of teaching experience, from novice to experienced teacher. Additionally, it presents various tips to consider when dealing with behavior issues in physical education, and suggests several techniques that have been utilized to help develop effective behavior management approaches when dealing with students. It is often beneficial to periodically review one's own practice to determine if effective behavior management skills are being utilized appropriately. Furthermore, the tips and techniques mentioned in this article serve as refreshers or reminders in helping P-12 physical educators deal with behavior issues encountered.
