Sex-Role Psychology.
Wesley, Frank; Wesley, Claire
The book explores the psychological aspects of sex-role development and investigates various approaches which have been suggested to provide greater equality between females and males. Chapter one describes the psychology of women and identifies possible approaches toward integration of male and female characteristics. Chapter two discusses historically the hereditary and environmental theories of sex-role differences, and enumerates biological differences that exist at birth, as well as those that develop during growth. Chapter three explores sex-role differences at various developmental stages and relates how these differences become established through parents, teachers, and peers. Chapter four analyzes conditioning, reinforcement, and modeling as modes of learning. Chapter five compares the intellectual capacities of females and males and the differential rates of their intellectual development. Chapter six discusses the historical antecedents of the division of labor and analyzes the factors that motivate women to work. Chapter seven reviews theories and observational data about development of the sexual urge. Chapter eight discusses psychological tests to measure personality, attitudes, interests, and behaviors with respect to male-female differences. Chapter nine reviews changes in sex-role stereotyping during the last few decades. (Author/AV)
