New Orleans ranks as the city with the largest Vietnamese community in the nation. With their growing number, problems with the Plaquemines Parish community as well as with some black organizations have developed, particularly in the areas of employment and housing. Several individuals have argued that local businesses hired large numbers of Vietnamese for jobs that were previously held by blacks and that Vietnamese refugees were placed in Federally subsidized housing while New Orleanians were already on waiting lists for such housing. Despite numerous efforts by the mass media, several organization and various individuals to relieve the tension, the controversy over the Vietnamese refugees and their resettlement continues. Prospects for a solution to the problem look dim. Projections show that more Vietnamese will be coming to the United States and, because of various factors, Louisiana will attract a sizeable portion of these new immigrants. (Author/EB)
