Fading Skies
Sio, Betsy Menson
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v108 n5 p26-27 Jan 2009
A sky fading from blue to white to red at the horizon, and water darkening from light to midnight blue. Strong diagonals slashing through the image, drawing a viewer's eyes deeper into the picture, and delicate trees poised to convey a sense of beauty. These are the fascinating strengths of the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). In this article, the author shares how she was charged with bringing some aspect of Japanese culture to her students upon her return from Japan. Here, she describes how she introduced the ukiyo-e style of printmaking to her students. (Contains 1 online resource.)
