Developing Strategic Readers
Jones, Jennifer; Leahy, Susie
Science and Children, v44 n3 p30-34 Nov 2006
As elementary students progress from "learning to read" toward "reading to learn," it is vital that they become strategic readers. A strategic reader is one who understands when and how to use a strategy in order to comprehend text. While some students use strategies naturally during the reading process, most students must be taught how to "actively think" during reading. This article presents three strategies to help students learn to actively question as they read science texts: (1) Question-Answer-Relationships; (2) Wonder Notebooks; and (3) Reciprocal Questioning. For the strategies to be truly effective, teachers have to model each strategy and provide significant guided practice for students to independently engage in such strategic endeavors while reading. Once they do so and students are comfortable with the techniques, they will be armed with three powerful tools to use continuously as they learn about the world around them.
