Youthwork as Modern Dance

Nicole and Matt are working together at Nexus, a group home, with six youth: Cathie, Maria, Ramon, Ron, Cheryl, and Nick. Nexus is a two-story house in the center of a medium-sized city. It is an older building that has been decorated and enlivened with the youth's art and music. Their story is presented in this article to illustrate how youthwork is similar to a dance. Matt and Nicole are like modern dancers. Their shift is planned (choreographed) in advance but improvised along the way. As they interact, they try to sense as well as know when to be at the center of the group and at the edge, when to move in or move out, to raise or lower their voices, to walk or run, sit down or stand, and so forth. Meanwhile, the youth learn to dance by being with Nicole and Matt. They begin to get a feel for where they should be, what they should do, and how they should speak in certain situations. Boundaries and limits are tested as they move closer or apart. Skills are learned such as brushing teeth, shooting a basket, painting a mural, or solving math problems as they move together through the day. A conflict is resolved as they struggle and find a sense of resolution. As they dance, several themes define their attitudes, actions, and movements. These themes are interconnected. One overlaps with or is intertwined with another, a nexus or spaghetti bowl of values, beliefs, and approaches.
