Navajo Environmental Health Review by the National Environmental Health Association (Window Rock, Arizona, May 24-27, 1976).
Navajo Health Authority, Window Rock, AZ.; National Environmental Health Association, Denver, CO.
The Indian Health Committee met with key staff of the Indian Health Service (IHS) Area Office to review the environmental health services provided on the Navajo Reservation and make recommendations for improvement or expansion of current programs, if needed. Recommendations were made regarding environmental health and institutional personnel, veterinary involvement, water management, vector control, housing and mobile homes, uranium mill decontamination, solid waste disposal, silver smithing safety, personnel training, and the communications systems. Among the recommendations were that: due to the broad scope of the environmental health program on the Navajo Reservation, the personnel should be almost doubled in order to adequately maintain the program; additional personnel possessing institutional environmental control training are needed to service the new major medical facilities being developed and presently operating on the reservation; the Navajo Tribal Council be encouraged to increase their coyote and stray-dog control program in order to reduce the likelihood of a rabies outbreak. This report presents discussions of the recommendations, of IHS and Indian health facilities, and of the background of the Navajo Environmental Health Review; a summary of the "Indian Health Care Improvement Act" as passed by the House on July 30, 1976; program information on components of the Office of Environmental Health; a status report of inactive uranium mill sites; and the work plan for decontamination of the Shiprock uranium mill site.
