This report presents data compiled as part of a comprehensive program to measure and analyze the nation's resources expended for research and development (R&D). R&D spending in the United States is expected to reach $51 billion in 1979, 9% over the 1978 level. The R&D expenditures are expected to account for 2.2% of the gross national product (GNP) in 1979. Other figures in this report show that the federal government is expected to furnish $25.8 billion on R&D programs in 1979 with most of the increase planned for areas of energy and health. Non-federal R&D support is also expected to increase by 9% over the 1978 level, to $25.2 billion in 1979. Industry will provide over 90% of the funds. Basic and applied research spending are expected to amount to $6.4 billion and $12 billion respectively in 1979, nearly 10% more for each area than in 1978.
