Deepening the Connections: Liberal Education and Global Learning in College
Hovland, Kevin; Schneider, Carol Geary
About Campus, v16 n5 p2-8 Nov-Dec 2011
The world is changing in dramatic and complex ways. There can be little doubt that if the twentieth century was "The American Century," the twenty-first century has already become a Global Century, framed by new power dynamics, new economic realities, and new quests for self-determination and freedom across all parts of the globe. In this context, both as educators and as citizens, Americans need to ask new questions about their role in the world and about the kinds of learning students need to prosper and contribute, both as human beings and democratic citizens, in this volatile era of interdependence. In this article, the authors champion the importance of a twenty-first-century liberal education and provide examples of essential learning outcomes that make global and civic learning central and pervasive.
