Partners in Quality is a research and development project sponsored by the Canadian Child Care Federation and its affiliates to explore how child care providers, parents, and other partners can work together to support and improve quality in child care. This booklet, in both English and French, is the second in a series to support child care providers and to enhance the dialogue within communities on the importance of quality child care environments. The booklet is designed to be used for two workshops within the Partners in Quality series. The booklet focuses on caregiver relationships with the families of the children they care for and relationships and interactions when providers and families come from different cultures. The booklet is organized in four parts. Part 1 discusses the stress of full-time working mothers of children under 13, the importance of caregiver support for families, caregivers' and parents' perspectives toward child care, and caregiver-parent communication difficulties. Part 2 focuses on the impact of culture on child-rearing methods, family values, and identity; the culture of child care; and teaching children about differences. Part 3 offers suggestions for communicating more effectively with families and dealing with disagreements. Part 4 discusses reflective child care practice and introduces tools to assist in the reflection process concerning a code of ethics, standards of practice, and a guide to self-reflection.
