An Analytical Model for Learning: An Applied Approach.
Kassebaum, Peter Arthur
A mediated-learning package, geared toward non-traditional students, was developed for use in the College of Marin's cultural anthropology courses. An analytical model for learning was used in the development of the package, utilizing concepts related to learning objectives, programmed instruction, Gestalt psychology, cognitive psychology, and instructional design. The completed package contains a mediated workbook, directions, and 22 chapters, each providing a briefing sheet, objectives, performance activities, and a key terms and concepts section. Each chapter corresponds to a chapter in the textbook, "Profiles in Ethnology." A formative evaluation was conducted with an experimental group of 30 students who used six chapters from the text and corresponding chapters from the guide and a control group of 30 students who did not use the package. Evaluation results showed that: (1) the attrition rate for the control group was 23%, while that for the experimental group was 10%; (2) the mean examination score for the experimental group was 6.658 points greater than that for the control group; and (3) the highest examination score within the experimental group was 5 points higher than that of the control group. The study report includes a literature review, discusses procedures and methodology, and provides the learning package. (LAL)
