The Ecology of Urban Violence: Its Relationship to Health Promotion Behaviors in Low-Income Black and Latino Communities.
Sanders-Phillips, Kathy
American Journal of Health Promotion, v10 n4 p308-315 Mar-Apr 1996
A review of the literature on the impact of exposure to violence on psychologic functioning, perceptions of well- being, and health decisions and behavior in the context of black and Latino low-income urban communities found that exposure to violence can produce feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness, and alienation that limit motivation, involvement, and persistence in overcoming barriers to positive health behaviors.
