Utilizing the theme "Man and His Environment," the Octagon Lectures of 1969 were presented at the University of Western Australia, Nedlands, Western Australia. Problems arising from the imbalance between the ancient forces of nature and the new forces of human culture were dealt with by the lecturers. They revealed that the most important practical matter facing us today is the study of man's adaptation, or lack of it, to his environment. Medical researchers reported observed effects on man's physique and psyche; social scientists reported on man's behavior; engineers and architects reported on man's environment; and students spoke on the new generation's diagnosis of the problems and offered some solutions. Throughout, there was unanimity about our ignorance of both the magnitude of the problems posed by the environmental crisis and, hence, the appropriate solutions. The lectures were entitled: (1) The Human Organism in a Changing Environment, (2) Man and Medicine, (3) Historical Ecology of Man, (4) Mental Health and Modern Living, (5) Can Migration Solve Asia's Population Problem?, (6) Environmental Design, (7) Mind over Matter, Men, Machines and Money, (8) Economic Nationalism, (9) The Politics of Protest, and (10) The Prospect and Problems of Progress.
