Student computing is now mobile. For college students across the nation, convenient access to information--anytime, anywhere, on demand--has become not only a priority, but a necessity. To successfully serve the needs of this current generation of students, colleges and universities must recognize the trend and align services accordingly. Specialized software for computing--whether for mapping and imaging, design and modeling, computation and visualization, or statistical analysis--traditionally has been made available on computer lab systems, not widely distributed on students' personal devices. Virtualizing delivery of specialized software enables students to access the programs they need independent of location or time of day, while allowing institutions to reduce the number of computer lab machines provided and maintained for student use. This article describes two approaches to delivery of specialized software to students which the University of Virginia piloted before settling on the system called the Hive, which became a full production service in fall 2010.
