One of the major reasons for the present concern for the pollution of the environment lies in the doubts about whether economic growth is possible without proportionate increases in the pollution of our air, land, and water. In response, Professor Wolozin devotes Part One of this trilogy to examining the economic relationships that help to explain why pollution is a special problem of production and consumption. Part Two surveys the difficulties of measuring and assigning costs: who is responsible for the contamination of the environment? Part Three analyzes measures to combat pollution. Accompanying each article are teaching suggestions by Patrica R. Reilly of John Dewey High School, New York City. She sets down instructional objectives, ideas for motivating students, strategies for analysis of pertinent questions, and the use of models, tabular, and graphic materials for clarifying issues.
