Work, Family, and Community: Summary Proceedings of an Ad Hoc Committee.
Hayes, Cheryl D., Ed.
These proceedings contain summaries of five working group discussions and a discussion of suggestions for future research from an ad hoc meeting on Work, Family, and Community (Fedruary 21-22, 1980) in Washington, D.C. The meeting had these objectives: (1) to identify salient policy and research issues associated with changing patterns of labor force participation and family structure, (2) to examine the extent to which existing studies have helped resolve these issues, and (3) to suggest promising directions for future research to expand critical knowledge, influence program development, and improve government and corporate policies affecting well-being or parents and children. An introduction that discusses themes emerging from the working group discussions precedes summaries of the discussions on the topics of time use by parents and children, family and home, community support systems, policies and practices in the workplace, and role of government policies and programs. Five suggestions for research topics and approaches are then summarized. Appendixes include six presentations made entitled Trends in the Labor Force Participation of Women; Demographic Shifts: Changes in Family Structure; Effects of Maternal Employment on Children; Schools as a Community-Support System; Employers, Employee-Parents, and Their Responsibilities; and Government Policies and Programs: Mapping the Domain.
