Reevaluating the Aims of Modern Dance Training in Korea: Toward a Whole Dancer
Kim, Na-ye
Journal of Dance Education, v13 n2 p46-55 2013
This study reevaluates modern dance training in Korea and attempts to identify possible improvements. This study is based on the rationale that Korean modern dance training must recover its nature of a holistic connection between body and mind. A qualitative methodology was used to interpret data from in-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires. The findings reveal that modern dance training in Korea primarily prizes technical brilliance, which results from, first, the import of the uprooted personified techniques from the West that established the foundations of modern dance training in Korea; and second, the few dance opportunities available for aspiring dancers limited to entering college or competitions, which are assessed primarily based on technique. To resolve the imbalance in favor of technical learning in Korea, four components ("kinesis", "noesis", "poesis", and "gnosis") are identified that could enhance modern dance training and allow dancers to cultivate both the body and the mind in training.
