Constitutionally Protected or Substantially Disruptive?
Taylor, Kelley R.
Principal Leadership, v9 n1 p75-77 Sep 2008
The 2008 presidential campaign has, by all accounts, been extraordinary. Record numbers of voters expressed their views in historic primaries, and citizens across the country have been invigorated by debate about what policies and which politician will be best for this country. Equally noteworthy is the fact that young people have not been absent from that dialogue. Many children, "tweens," and full-fledged teenagers (some of whom will be first-time voters) have sincere thoughts about the upcoming election. Such attentiveness to current events is a good thing. But as a consequence and as the case presented in this article illustrates, school leaders should be prepared for some of that political expression to flow fast and furious into the school environment.
