The Development of Educational Materials for Community College Health Services.

Guidelines are presented for the development of educational materials for the Health Services Program at Prince George's Community College. This program, as part of the Human Development Department, serves three kinds of functions: remediation--the correction of health problems after they have arisen; prevention--the prior identification and removal of potential problems and barriers to success; and development--the growth of the program to meet student and staff development needs. Materials are presented in the following areas: (1) goals and objectives of health services; (2) the role of the nurse practioner; (3) examples of cooperation between human development and other areas of the college community; (4) survey form of student needs; (5) examples of outreach programs (e.g., weight control through behavior modification, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, video production, and the Health Education and Services Club); (6) in-service training for health services personnel; (7) formal health programs (e.g., health fair, health awareness week, and varsity athletic physicals); (8) examples of formal guidelines used in health services (e.g., issuing handicapped parking permits, pregnancy testing, procedures for psychiatric emergencies); (9) examples of learning materials available for student use in health services; (10) examples from a source book developed for use by work study students in health services; and (11) examples of articles for the school newspaper.
