Tips from Harry Potter for American Schools
Booth, Margaret Zoller; Booth, Grace Marie
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n6 p4-11 Feb 2004
The United States has been swept up in the "Harry Potter" phenomenon, with film adaptations, companion readers, and literary critique and analysis following J. K. Rowling's books on the adolescent wizard's adventures. The book has also touched off a reaction from conservative Christian institutions seeking to ban the books in school libraries for glorifying "wizardry" and being anti-Christian. Despite all the attention given the literary worth of the novels, there has been very little analysis of the primary locus of the action, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as an educational institution. In this article, the authors examine the quality of the education system in Harry Potter's Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and present a comparative analysis of the Hogwarts with the British model of education and also with the culture and structure of schools in the United States. Several comparisons had been drawn out including matters of discipline, academic testing, teaching methods, and student camaraderie.
