College and Career Readiness in DC: A Snapshot of CTE Integration
Blandford, Ayoka
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v87 n5 p30-35 May 2012
Preparing students for college and careers is a task that has drastically changed over time. The days of post-secondary education or a degree guaranteeing employment are things of the past, especially during times of economic instability. Also gone are the days of someone who is "good with their hands" graduating from high school and securing what was once known as blue-collar employment. The lines have become blurred in this Information Age and the education continuum must include all of the above. Enter college and career readiness. The education reform debate has heated up again in recent years with a focus on reviving what was once known as vocational education, but now with an upgrade. What was once seen as separate is now injected into the high school curricula and experience so that emerging students are "truly" work-ready. It would seem that in the 21st century career and technical education (CTE) is the evolution of vocational education coupled with the realization of the School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA). The Nation's Capital has been highlighted in the last few years as an example of the nation's underperforming schools and educational shortcomings. However, two DC high schools are the embodiment of CTE and are preparing today's students in ways that are different but yet the same: (1) Hospitality High School of Washington, DC; and (2) Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School. In this interview, President Rodney McBride talks about Hospitality High and what makes it a special place to learn and President Michael Johnson talks about the re-establishment of Phelps.
