Incorporating popular culture texts in the classroom can motivate students--particularly reluctant or struggling readers. This resource gives the reader everything they need to use television, movies, video games, music, magazines, and other media to enhance students' literacy learning. The reader will find a balance of research, theory, and practice, along with numerous classroom teaching ideas and student work samples. This book is organized into two parts. Part 1: Learning From Research and Classroom Teachers, contains the following chapters: (1) New Literacy Studies and Popular Culture Texts; (2) Integrating Popular Culture Texts in Primary Grades; (3) Integrating Popular Culture Texts in a Fourth-Grade Class; and (4) Integrating Popular Culture Texts in Developmental Reading Classes for Sixth-to Eighth-Grade Students. Part 2: Integrating Popular Culture Texts in Your Classroom, contains the following chapters: (5) Gaining Knowledge of Popular Culture Texts; (6) Using Popular Culture Texts to Enhance Literacy Learning; and (7) Managing an Integration of Popular Culture Texts. The following are appended: (1) Resources for Teachers; and (2) Reproducibles. An Index is included.
