Debunking the Myths: An Evaluation of Opposition to the Arming of Campus Law Enforcement Officers in Rhode Island
Wilson, Charles P.; Wilson, Shirley A.
Campus Law Enforcement Journal, v41 n2 p16-23, 25-26 Mar-Apr 2011
In March 2010, a committee formed by the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education recommended the arming of police officers at the state's three institutions of higher learning. The issue of arming campus police personnel is one fraught with political, philosophical, social, perceptual, and personal tensions, yet it is crucial to the advancement of professionalized police and safety services at the state's colleges and universities. While the authors' attitude is distinctly in tune with the concepts of arming, both as a means of professional enhancement of services to the campus community and the safety of both officers and campus constituents alike, this paper seeks to assess and methodically evaluate the arguments against arming campus police officers at Rhode Island's three state-supported institutions of higher learning.
