The Birth and Development of Sociometry: The Work and Legacy of Jacob Moreno (1889-1974)
Marineau, Rene F.
Social Psychology Quarterly, v70 n4 p322-325 Dec 2007
This article profiles Jacob Levy Moreno, the founder of this journal. He was born in 1889 in Romania, but moved to Vienna with his parents when he was four years of age. By all accounts, Moreno as a child was brilliant, spontaneous, creative and, presaging his later successes, was fascinated by relationships, first with his brothers and sisters, then with his friends. From this early interest in the primacy of the social, Moreno became the initiator of sociometry, psychodrama, and group psychotherapy. Moreno's legacy has an essential thread: the primacy of relationships. This was the legacy that he offered the American Sociological Society when he transferred the journal "Sociometry" to the American Sociological Society in 1955. Moreno's philosophy and strategies of research and therapy are as relevant today as they were then.
