Types of Juvenile Sex Offenders
Bauman, Sheri
Prevention Researcher, v9 n4 p11-13 2002
Although juvenile sex offenders (JSOs) account for a significant percentage of sex crimes committed in this country, researchers have only recently begun to study this population. One line of inquiry has been to investigate sub-types of offenders, in order to determine whether different types of offenders have different personality profiles and risk patterns. Although much of the research on JSOs to date has been inconclusive, those studies that sampled subgroups were more likely to detect significant patterns. A better understanding of such types could lead to improved prevention efforts and to innovations in treatment more tailored to the needs of specific types of offenders. This article examines some of the various categories that researchers have suggested in an aim to better understand the various types of sex offenders so that intervention and prevention can be more appropriately targeted.
