Wright, Ali
Educational Horizons, v92 p12-15 Apr-May 2014
This article offers a peek into high school math teacher Ali Wright's typical school day, which includes time-tested strategies that she uses to build a positive culture in her classroom. Scheduled timeframes and activities include before school starts, five minutes before class, during announcements, during class, last five minutes of class, planning period, lunch, and after school. The following three ways for a first-year teacher to create a positive classroom culture are also described: (1) Identify three key beliefs, words, or phrases that demonstrate a positive classroom culture; (2) Reflect on these descriptors--both physically and objectively--and focus on implementation; and (3) Be consistent.
