Development of the PMPQ: A Structural Job Analysis Questionnaire for the Study of Professional and Managerial Positions. PMPQ Report No. 1.
Mitchell, Jimmy L.; McCormick, Ernest J.
The development and analysis of the Professional and Managerial Position Questionnaire (PMPQ) is reported. PMPQ is intended to serve as a job analysis instrument for higher level occupations than those assessed by the Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ). Four approaches to job analysis are described with different emphases on the requirements of the work or the characteristics of the workers. The development of the PMPQ is based on work done for the PAQ plus other job analysis studies. A nine-point scale is used with verbal anchors for alternating scale points. The 93 scale items are classified in five categories: part-of-the-job, complexity, impact, responsibility, and special. The field administration is based on 300 cases from 29 sources in 17 states and represents approximately 45 different companies. Data from the administration are studied by a principal components analysis with orthogonal rotation and the resulting principal component scores are then used in a multiple regression analysis to predict salary. Dimensions of the analysis are interpreted to include planning and decision making on the job and background variables of experience and training. (CTM)
