Displacement, Outplacement, or Inplacement? Options for Business and Industry.
Wiltzius, Thomas J.
This report considers the differences among displacement, outplacement, and inplacement and looks at the risks, benefits, and costs of each. Displacement is defined as the termination of employment with little attention given to corporate or individual needs. Outplacement is defined as the pre-planned management of employee termination, addressing the specific needs of the employer and the resultant needs of the employee. Inplacement is seen as having almost all of the characteristics of outplacement, except that while the individual position is lost, employment is not. The goals of outplacement counseling are listed and techniques used to meet those goals are discussed. Individual sheets are provided which list the benefits, risks, and costs of displacement, outplacement, and inplacement. An outline of outplacement and the organization is given, elements of a termination outplacement plan are listed, and an outline of outplacement or inplacement and the individual is provided. Outplacement counseling stages are presented in outline form and outplacement ethical issues are given, followed by a set of questions related to ethical issues. External versus internal services of outplacement are given and adult career transition issues and career development barriers are identified. (NB)
