Organizational Justice
Burns, Travis
Principal Leadership, v13 n8 p42-45 Apr 2013
Helping principals understand the importance of organizational justice is the first step in enhancing learning outcomes for all learners, regardless of their social class, race, abilities, sex, or gender. In schools, organizational justice may be defined as teachers' perceptions of fairness, respect, and equity that relate to their interactions with the principal and the application and enforcement of policies and procedures. Using Page Middle School, a 6-8 school in Gloucester, VA, as an example, this article describes how principals can ensure academic equity and promote social justice in schools, beginning with principal-teacher interactions and the development of teachers' perceptions of organizational justice, as teachers' perceptions of fairness and equity are essential to a successful principalship. Recommendations for principals who want to bolster the levels of organizational justice in their schools are presented.
