Out-of-State Institutions of Higher Education Operating in the State of Maryland, Academic Year 1980-1981. Postsecondary Education Research Reports.
Maryland State Board for Higher Education, Annapolis.
An annual update for the 1980-81 academic year on out-of-state institutions approved to operate in the State of Maryland is presented. Information on programs and enrollment for specific locations within Maryland at which out-of-state institutions operated is presented. The information is organized as follows: information on institutional changes since the preceding academic year, and the current status of approved institutions; enrollment information by institution; information on courses and programs currently offered; information on the type of locations where out-of-state institutions operate. Thirteen out-of-state institutions were approved to operate at 36 separate off-campus locations during the 1980-81 academic year, with an estimated total enrollment of 3,833 during the fall semester 1980. This compares to 11 institutions approved to operate at 41 locations in 1979-80. The 36 sites approved include: nine federal agencies, eight private organizations, seven county and private schools, five naval installations, four military bases, two churches, and one state hospital. Sixty-four percent of enrolled students are at the graduate level, 27 percent are at the undergraduate level, and 8 percent are taking noncredit course offerings. Three institutions based in Washington, D.C. enroll 82 percent of all the students. The vast majority of students enroll in programs with an occupational orientation. Sixty-five percent of all enrollments are in one of four major fields: business (23 percent), engineering (21 percent), education (11 percent), and computer science (10 percent). The Code of Maryland Regulations concerning the monitoring mechanism for evaluating compliance of out-of-state institutions is appended. (SW)
