Federal legislation now requires the deposit of some taxpayer-funded research in "open-access" repositories--that is, sites where scholarship and research are made freely available over the Internet. The institutions whose faculty produce the research have begun to see the benefit of open-access publication as well. From the perspective of faculty who generate the research and scholarship, open-access policies can be both promising and threatening. In this article, the author offers three tips on how faculty can contribute to the success of the open-access movement. These include: (1) investigate whether an institutional repository exists at one's college or university library; (2) challenge journal editorial boards to rethink their publication models; and (3) initiate a dialog with one's campus colleagues and professional associations about broadening promotion. The author believes that open access helps achieve the fundamental mission of the academy--to disseminate knowledge. By taking these suggested actions, faculty can retake control of their scholarly output.
