Physical Activity Lessons in Preschools

A review of the current literature indicates that childhood obesity is on the rise. What is more disconcerting is that this epidemic has significantly affected the preschool-age population, with the percentage of overweight children increasing from 5.0% to 12.4%, as indicated by National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) surveys taken in 1976 to 1980 and in 2003 to 2006. To this end, the current study examines the incorporation (or lack thereof), of health-related physical activity in 40 preschools in Indiana. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire to indicate what health-related physical activity they were incorporating in their classroom curricula. In addition, they listed the number of times they were incorporating such activities and why they incorporated them. Percentages of health activities were calculated based on the total number of responses for individual physical activities. Seventy-one percent of the respondents reported incorporating physical activities in their class schedules. Respondents incorporated such activities as outdoor or out-of-class play, motor development activities (e.g., yoga), showing exercise videos, and bringing in physical activity experts into the classroom. Although preschool teachers are making efforts to increase physical activity in the classroom, such efforts need to be intensified.
