A Preliminary Analysis of the Role, Expectations, and Training Needs of the Learning Center Staff of the State University of Nebraska. Executive Summary No. 10 [and] Working Paper No. 10.
Sell, G. Roger
A survey of the manpower who staff learning centers of the State University of Nebraska (SUN) is reported. Four learning centers in different geographical locations in the state--Scottsbluff, Kearney, Lincoln, and Omaha--are available to learners who enroll in SUN courses, or wish consultation and advice on educational opportunities to meet their interests. The role, expectations, and training needs that learning staff reported for the period September 1, 1974 to December 30, 1974 are presented. The report is organized in four sections. First, the procedures used in preparing and administering a "Learning Staff Development Questionnaire" are discussed. The results are given in the second section for the questionnaire as completed by each of the eight learning center staff, and conclusions are drawn from the findings of the questionnaire in the third section. Finally, a set of recommendations for action is offered, including: assign learning centers a "clearinghouse" function; plan and implement specific training experiences for staff; examine the role and effectiveness of present learning centers before continuing and/or expanding them; carefully articulate the organizational relationship of SUN and the University of Mid-America; adopt an appropriate strategy for relating SUN to existing state "outreach" programs; and encourage and support experimentation with learning centers.
