Group Motivation in a Nutrition Project for Pregnant and Parenting Teens and Their Spouses by Use of an Incentive Plan.
Collins, Gloria
A child care agency located in the southeastern United States serving homeless youth up to the age of 21 years provided pregnant and parenting teenagers with shelter and support services and provided individual and group counseling sessions focusing on health and nutrition, parenting and child care, sexuality and pregnancy, family support services and adoption, homemaking and life skills, education and job training. A decrease in attendance and inconsistency in enrollment in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program component of the Teen Parent Aftercare Program was noticed and explored. An incentive plan was developed which included gifts for the teenagers and their families, and supplies for their infants. An escort system developed by staff and volunteers provided transportation on a regular weekly basis. Counseling in nutrition education was extended to include other speakers throughout the county. Outreach to teen parents and their families by counselors and staff was done on a regular basis. Food preparation and demonstration formed a part of aftercare sessions. Reports indicated an increase in teenage parents' attendance, and improvement in their nutrition awareness needs for themselves and for their infants. Ongoing plans will continue to focus on the program's teenage parents' nutrition and health needs. (Appendices include sample attendance records and questionnaires.) (Author/NB)
