The Teen Parent Academy
Baptiste, H. Prentice, Jr.; Walker, Diane
Science Teacher, v72 n3 p40-43 Mar 2005
Pregnant teenagers and young parents often do not receive the quality of education available to other students. Most schools do not have a separate facility or program that deals with their special needs. Pregnant teens and teen parents should not be left behind. The Teen Parent Academy--a unique program in a predominantly Hispanic Texas border community--effectively used a multicultural curriculum focused on science literacy. The program occurred in a facility separate from the regular high school and included students who were pregnant or female teen parents ranging in age from 13-20 (grades 8-12) considered at risk of dropping out of school, with attendant risk of not receiving further educational support. The teen-parent students were provided with many opportunities to make connections amongst the sciences to help them make informed decisions about the changing complexities of their daily lives. Students learned to use the tools of science and began to appreciate science in deeper and more meaningful ways. This article describes some of the activities used in various grade 8-12 courses of the program. Activities for the classes were taken from several regular high school courses and modified to be more practical and relevant to the daily lives of teen parents. Although these activities were used with a unique population of young women, interesting inquiry-based activities can allow other at-risk students to find success. By making activities practical and relevant to students' lives, science literacy is enhanced for all.
