Hiroshima: Perspectives on the Atomic Bombing.
Cheng, Amy
In this curriculum module students analyze both U.S. and Japanese perspectives of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The activities integrate Howard Gardner's work on multiple intelligences. The module is recommended as a supplement to textbook coverage of the war in the Pacific and of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It can be used to support both state and national history standards. In the first activity students examine U.S. textbook coverage of the atomic bombing. Thirteen small group and whole class activities follow. Small group activities include "Rewriting a Chapter from an English Language Textbook for Japanese Ninth Graders,""Literary Perspectives,""Medical Perspectives,""American Atomic Bomb Survivors,""Non-Japanese Victims' Perspectives,""Comics,""Hiroshima Poetry," and "Stamps." Whole class activities analyze the legacies of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and address the following topics: radiation effects on survivors and their descendants, financial compensation, medical treatment, survivors' drawings, and Smithsonian controversy. Handouts and primary sources accompany each activity. Contains a bibliography, a glossary, and 46 slides. (BT)
