This paper projects an image of the future from the present to early in the next century and provides a scenario of a day spent in a school for young children in 2001. The image of the future is based on a chronicle of events which might conceivably happen. The scenario, set in one particular time and place in the future, describes what early childhood education might be like. Among future events envisioned are an oil crisis, nuclear plant accidents, continued labor strikes and a depression leading to change in the direction of labor intensive agriculture, worker-owned industries and businesses, and personally-owned power sources. Other changes are the establishment of life-long education, a decrease in population growth, and more diversified family structures. The futuristic scenario depicts a school where children bring their parents and siblings at all times of day and night to engage in learning activities, including computer programs, a holographic theater, and sensory nooks. Children also stay overnight at the school when they have family problems, and they help grow and cook their own food. (Author/SS)
