Cross-Cultural Bias Analysis of Cattell Culture-Fair Intelligence Test.
Nenty, H. Johnson
The Cattell Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CCFIT) was administered to a large sample of American, Nigerian, and Indian adolescents, and item data were examined for cultural bias. The CCFIT was designed to measure fluid intelligence, which is not influenced by cultural differences. Four different item analysis techniques were used to determine cross-cultural validity: Scheuneman's modified chi-square procedure (SSX2); Rudner and Convey's TID-45 degrees item difficulty p-value; one-parameter latent trait Rasch model; and Cochran's Test Method (CTX2) using chi-square. Results indicated a high inter-method correlation, strengthening the convergent validity of the methods used. CCFIT's claim of measuring a single second-order intelligence factor, fluid intelligence, was supported. However, 59 percent of the items were identified as biased, strongly suggesting the CCFIT is not free of cultural bias. Hence, it may not have universal validity as a measure of fluid intelligence.
