Sociocultural Factors in Client-Counsellor Self-Disclosure in Nigeria, Africa
Oluwatosin, S. A.
British Journal of Guidance & Counselling, v42 n4 p403-409 2014
This paper reviews various factors that interplay in the counselling sessions within the cultural milieu of African society, especially Nigeria and particularly within the context of school-based counselling provision. These factors, which were found to be both sociological and cultural, hamper effective client self-disclosure during counselling encounters, based on empirical findings in the literature. The paper therefore postulates a customised form of counselling practice that incorporates some of these issues in dispensing counselling services in Africa, to enhance effective counselling outcome. The absence of such practice has, in the view of the authors, hindered the positive patronage and practice of counselling in Nigerian society.
