The purpose of this case study was to explore the synchronous behaviors enacted by mother and infant with blindness. In the study, a mother's less than optimal experience with the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) had a profound effect not only on her and her infant son, who was born 3 months prematurely and was visually impaired, but also on the entire family. Six months after the baby came home from the NICU, the mother was taught infant massage. The infant massage protocol used in this study was created by McClure (1998) and sanctioned by the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM). This study has increased the knowledge base of social communication behaviors in general and of pairs of parents and infants, particularly those infants with visual impairments. The results of the study suggest the value of an ongoing study of infant massage as both an intervention for promoting the formation of secure attachment in infants who are visually impaired or have other disabilities and a way of reducing the effects of unfavorable NICU experiences.
