Volume 1 of the fourth edition of the encyclopedia contains directory and descriptive listings of organizations in the United States and Canada, resource materials concerning North American Indians, and a bibliography of in-print books about the American Indian. The first section of the volume contains source listings of government agencies, reservations, tribal councils, other Indian tribes/groups, federally recognized tribes/bands, Canadian reserves/bands, national associations, state/regional associations, museums/monuments/parks, libraries with collections pertaining in whole or part to North American Indian subjects, Native American centers, Indian health services, Indian schools, departments/personnel of institutions offering college courses on American Indians, radio/television stations/programs, audio-visual aids, audio-visual distributors, and magazines/periodicals dealing with history/culture/contemporary issues of North American Indians. Each listing gives the address, phone number, chief personnel, and in most cases a brief description of activities and pertinent information. Listings are arranged either alphabetically or alpha-geographically within categories. An explanatory note at the beginning of each section details the type of sources listed and the arrangement. The second part of the volume is a bibliography of approximately 4,500 in-print books. Listed alphabetically, each book entry gives basic bibliographical information and grade level where appropriate. A listing of book titles by subject and a publishers' directory complete the volume.
