The New Zealand Ministry of Education's early childhood curriculum policy is built on a framework called "Te Whariki." This framework provides a sociocultural context for children's early learning and emphasizes a learning partnership between teachers, parents, families, and community. Besides interpersonal relationships, Te Whariki emphasizes recognizing the diversity of cultures, philosophies, and natural environments throughout New Zealand, providing all children with an opportunity to "develop knowledge and an understanding of the cultural heritages." Teachers intentionally construct a curriculum acknowledging children's learning and development in the larger context of the child's community, as well as in the early childhood setting. McNaughton Kindergarten's early childhood program is an example of an early childhood program that truly prioritizes recognizing diverse cultures and encouraging family involvement. This article presents recommendations for implementing practices that recognize the importance of family and culture in early care and education.
