Promoting Health Literacy through GED Testing
Golbeck, Amanda L.; LaBonty, Jan; Paschal, Angelia M.; Harris, Margaret; Ryan, Kerry E.; Molgaard, Craig A.
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal, v4 n1 p13-23 Spr 2010
Using the World Health Organization definition of health for reference and a diverse group of raters, we sought to determine the following about the 931 questions that comprise the seven English pencil-and-paper versions of U.S. GED Official Practice Tests: (a) the prevalence of health-related questions and (b) representation of the eight U.S. National Health Education Standards (NHES) for grades 9-12. We found a low prevalence of health-related questions within most GED subjects, and minimal or no representation of most NHES standards. We encourage alignment of future official GED practice materials with NHES as a means of improving future public health awareness, practices, and performance among the GED population.
