The purpose of this research was to determine whether music training is correlated with increased reading comprehension skills in young adults. In addition, an attempt was made to replicate Patson and Tippett's (2011) finding that background music impairs language comprehension scores in musicians but not in nonmusicians. Participants with musical training (N = 35) and without musical training (N = 15) completed a 30-item researcher-designed reading comprehension test. Participants were randomly assigned to complete the test instrument in silence or in the presence of background music. Results indicated that there was no significant main effect for either music training or the presence of background music, and no significant interaction between the two conditions. These results are inconsistent with those reported by previous researchers. More research is necessary to understand the effects of music training and listening on adult reading comprehension.
