Native Dwellings of North America, Grades 3 to 6. Teacher's Kit.
Shemie, Bonnie; Branston, Linda; Main, Lorna
This teacher's resource kit is designed to complement the six books in the "Native Dwellings" series and to provide suggestions for a comprehensive curriculum unit. The books describe the shelters created by a pre-20th century groups of Native American peoples. The relationship of weather, geography, and culture is examined and identified as a factor in decisions concerning materials, style, design, and decoration of the structures. Books in the series include: (1) "Houses of Skin and Bones" (Far North); (2) "Houses of Bark" (Woodland Indians); (3) "Houses of Hide and Earth" (Plains Indians); (4) "Houses of Wood" (Northwest Coast); (5) "Mounds of Earth and Shell" (Southeast); and (6) "Houses of Adobe" (Southwest). Many of the activities given in this guide can be used with all the books; others are specific to one title. The activities, appropriate for use with students from age 8-12, are organized by book topic and by strand. A glossary, reproducible student sheets, and a reference list, resource materials and useful addresses are provided. (Contains 22 references.) (MM)
