Wall Art
McGinley, Connie Q.
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n8 p52 Apr 2004
The author of this article, an art teacher at Monarch High School in Louisville, Colorado, describes how her experience teaching in a new school presented an exciting visual challenge for an art teacher--monotonous brick walls just waiting for decoration. This school experienced only minimal instances of graffiti, but as an art teacher, she did see an interest in graffiti in student sketchbooks. This observation, combined with this art teacher's drive to improve the visual environment of the school led to the development of a wall art unit, focusing on graffiti and murals. This article describes a project in which students learned to conceive and create works of visual art that demonstrate how the communication of their ideas relates to the media, techniques, and processes they use.
